Senior DevOps Engineer

Job Purpose

The Senior DevOps Engineer will be responsible for designing, building, automating and operating reliable, secure and scalable cloud infrastructure and production environments.

The role will have a strong focus on AWS, Terraform, Linux, Docker and infrastructure automation. The successful candidate will be expected to understand infrastructure at a deeper level, develop and maintain reusable Terraform modules, troubleshoot complex production issues and continuously improve the reliability, security and maintainability of the environment.

The role requires a hands-on engineer who can work across cloud, infrastructure, networking, operating systems and automation layers, while taking ownership of technical problems from investigation through resolution.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, deploy, maintain and continuously improve AWS cloud infrastructure using Terraform and infrastructure-as-code practices.
• Develop, maintain and enhance reusable, internally owned Terraform modules and infrastructure patterns across multiple environments.
• Manage and troubleshoot Linux-based production systems, with a focus on Debian/Ubuntu environments, system performance, networking, services and security.
• Build, deploy and operate containerized workloads using Docker and AWS ECS.
• Manage container images and registries using Amazon ECR.
• Design, configure and troubleshoot AWS networking components including VPCs, routing, security groups, NAT, Application Load Balancers and Transit Gateway.
• Configure, maintain and troubleshoot IPSec VPN connectivity, including StrongSwan-based deployments.
• Configure and maintain nginx services and reverse proxy configurations.
• Automate infrastructure configuration, operational activities and repetitive tasks using Ansible and Python.
• Investigate and resolve complex production incidents across application, operating system, network, container and cloud infrastructure layers.
• Perform root-cause analysis and implement sustainable solutions to prevent recurring production issues.
• Improve infrastructure reliability, availability, security, observability and maintainability.
• Identify opportunities to reduce manual operational effort through automation, tooling and improved engineering practices.
• Review infrastructure and automation changes and contribute to technical design and architecture decisions.
• Implement and maintain Git-based workflows for infrastructure and automation code.
• Develop and maintain appropriate documentation covering infrastructure architecture, operational procedures, troubleshooting approaches and reusable solutions.
• Collaborate with engineering and technical teams to deliver scalable and resilient infrastructure solutions.
• Take ownership of infrastructure-related problems from initial investigation through resolution and continuous improvement.
• Evaluate technical trade-offs and contribute to the evolution of cloud infrastructure and DevOps practices.

Skills & Experience

• Strong hands-on experience in DevOps and AWS cloud infrastructure.
• Strong experience with Terraform, including modules, state, providers, dependencies and infrastructure design.
• Hands-on experience with AWS services including EC2, ECS, ECR, S3, CloudFront, ALB, VPC, IAM, security groups, routing and NAT.
• Strong Linux administration and troubleshooting experience, preferably Debian/Ubuntu.
• Good understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, routing, firewalls, NAT and VPNs.
• Hands-on experience with Docker, nginx and Ansible.
• Proficiency in Python or scripting for infrastructure and operational automation.
• Experience troubleshooting production infrastructure across cloud, network, OS and container layers.
• Experience with Git-based infrastructure and CI/CD workflows.
• Strong problem-solving, ownership and automation mindset.

Desirable 

• Experience with AWS Transit Gateway and multi-VPC/multi-account architectures.
• Experience with IPSec VPN / StrongSwan.
• Experience designing reusable Terraform modules and highly available AWS infrastructure.
• Familiarity with Linux networking tools such as tcpdump, ss, dig, curl, openssl and traceroute.
